Majuli–Jorhat Link Bridge Construction Reaches 36%; Completion Targeted by December 2027 .

Pankaj Nath, Assam, 9 October :

Construction of the ambitious 6.8-kilometre Majuli–Jorhat link bridge across the Brahmaputra is progressing steadily, with about 36 percent of work completed, officials said. The bridge is being built by SPS Construction India Pvt Ltd (formerly known as SP Singla) and is scheduled for completion by December 2027. The project involves modern engineering techniques at par with best industrial practices and has 71 nos of foundations over the 6.812 KM long bridge under construction including 40 nos of well foundations specially for accommodating the mighty river Brahmaputra which has own natural meandering to flow without any disturbance. Engineers, technical staff and labourers are continuing work despite challenging river conditions and seasonal constraints. Works on all the foundations and piers are going on except for the foundations in the main river channel due to high water levels. With the receding water levels and the arrival of special barges to the site, the works in the main river are also expected to be started within October. Casting of PSC Box Segments is already progress in the Dakhinpat Camp at Majuli, whereas the casting of segments at Jorhat side will start towards November this year. It is expected that launching of the segments will also commence in Majuli Side from November this year. Roads of NH Standards forming the NH-715K connecting to the bridge are also under construction. The Dakhinpat to Kamlabari stretch, spanning about 11.7 km, and the Hatishal-to-Jorhat road, of roughly 7.8 km, are also gearing up in progress. The project is being implemented under close administrative monitoring of State PWD, with high-level coordination between State Govt of Assam and Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Govt. Of India to keep it on schedule. State Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been specially credited for ensuring the timely restart of the bridge works and for ensuring the rapid mobilization. In the other hand PWD (Roads and Buildings) department and the project’s administrative leadership — including Special Secretary and Commissioner Raj Chakrabarty have been credited also for ensuring timely progress through frequent inspections and active supervision. The NH-715K link from Kamalabari to North Lakhimpur via the Luit-Khabalu -Subansiri alignment on SH-21 is also under the consideration of Govt. Of India, the timely sanction of which will ensure seamless connectivity between the two parallel highways along the Brahmaputra namely NH-15 & NH-715 thereby reducing the travel distance from North Lakhimpur to Jorhat to only 63 KM which till now is around 250-300 KM via Bogibeel Bridge or Kalibhomora Bridge. Once completed, the bridge will provide a direct, reliable link between Majuli — one of the world’s largest river islands — and the commercial hub of Jorhat. The connection is expected to markedly improve mobility for daily commuters, students and patients, and will strengthen emergency-response access. Officials and local stakeholders anticipate wide-ranging economic and social benefits: smoother market access for agricultural produce, dairy, fisheries and handicrafts; expanded opportunities for education, healthcare and tourism; and new employment prospects for local youth driven by increased eco-tourism and cultural activities. The administration also intends to develop transport links and market infrastructure around the bridge to ensure that investment benefits reach local communities. Technically, the project addresses the Brahmaputra’s variable flow patterns, complex soil conditions and seasonal flood risks through tailored engineering solutions and strict safety standards. Authorities say rigorous quality and safety protocols are being followed to ensure the bridge’s long-term resilience. The state government and project team emphasize the strategic and economic importance of the link bridge and remain committed to completing it within the stipulated timeframe to catalyse development across northern Assam.
